Healthier Options for Drinks for the Holidays

It’s no secret that liquor sales are up and Americans are increasing their alcohol consumption more than ever since the pandemic began. Aside from the major potential risks of dependence or addiction, alcohol consumption can also lead to increased body fat and loss of lean muscle mass, increased risk of cancer, and many other serious conditions.

With the holidays coming up and the end to the pandemic nowhere in sight, it’s completely understandable that most people are going to drink regardless.

So, for those of us who are trying to lose weight, stay fit, and optimize our physical health, what are the healthiest alcohol options?

Integrative men’s health specialist Dr. Myles Spar, Chief Medical Officer of Vault Health, has several of his expert recommendations and healthy favorites:

1.    Red Wine

If you pay attention to the news, you’re probably not surprised to see this one at the top of this list. Science has consistently shown that red wine can provide a number of health benefits, especially when it comes to your heart.

According to the Mayo Clinic, red wine contains antioxidants like resveratrol that may help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, protect your blood vessels, and inhibit clotting. And a review examining the effects of wine’s abundant antioxidants found it may be beneficial for reducing cardiovascular risk factors.

New research suggests red wine may also give your brain a boost by leaving protective compounds in your gut. Looking to understand how red wine consumption can delay the onset of neurodegenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, researchers from the Institute of Food Science Research in Madrid studied the compounds left in the gut after wine has passed through it. They discovered that some of these compounds can protect neurons from being damaged or killed off.

2.    Bloody Mary

This drink makes the list due to its low caloric content and high nutritional value. Tomato juice is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants like lycopene, which has been shown to protect against heart disease and some types of cancer. (Look for the low-sodium variety, since some tomato juices contain a ton of salt.)

Celery and other vegetable garnishes add nutrients like vitamin K, folate, and fiber. Like your bloody mary on the spicy side? According to LiveStrong, hot sauce like Tabasco contains capsaicin, a compound that may aid in digestion and could even lead to weight loss—a study published in the International Journal of Obesity found capsaicin increased satiety and reduced fat intake.

3.   Margarita or Mojito

The most important thing to consider when weighing the health benefits of a cocktail is the mixer. Soda, juice, and even tonic water are loaded with sugar, as are pre-made mixes. To enjoy a margarita, simply pour tequila and freshly squeezed lime juice over ice in a glass with a salted rim. If you’re in the mood for a refreshing cocktail but don’t want a sugar bomb, try a mojito. This classic Cuban highball features fresh mint, which Dr. Oz reports is good for digestion and helps cleanse your liver.

Try Esquire’s recipe for the ultimate mojito:
Ingredients:
-  1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
-  1 tsp. superfine sugar
-   3 mint leaves
-   2 oz. white rum
-   Club soda or seltzer

Directions:
Muddle lime juice with sugar in a glass. Add mint, pressing leaves gently against the side of the glass. Fill glass 2/3 full with ice and pour in rum. Top with soda or seltzer and garnish with the squeezed-out lime shell.

4.             Hot Toddy
This medicinal drink is so popular there’s even a holiday devoted to it: National Hot Toddy Day, which falls on January 11th, in case you’re interested in celebrating. Not only does it taste great, the traditional combination of whiskey, lemon, honey, and boiling water may also ease cold symptoms because hot drinks promote mucus secretion, which defends against bacteria and viruses. This is especially true of sweet and sour drinks like the toddy.

As for the alcohol, it can act as a sedative to help you sleep, the best thing you can do to speed recovery when you’re under the weather. Just don’t overdo it—too much alcohol will make you feel much worse instead of better.

5.    Vodka & Soda or Martini with Olives

While it doesn’t offer any health benefits per se, this drink is a good choice for people who are watching their weight. For a healthy twist on your Vodka & Soda, try adding frozen grapes. The American Heart Association recommends these as a heart-healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth and freezing them also helps keep your drink cold for longer.

According to MyFitnessPal, the average vodka and soda water with lime only contains 96 calories. And a martini only has the vodka or gin, a bit of olive juice, and olives, which have healthy monounsaturated fats. Just be sure to skip the blue-cheese stuffed variety.

Obviously, there’s no such thing as healthy alcohol if you drink too much of it, so be sure to make sure you’re drinking responsibly and don’t have a dependency on it.

Please drink responsibly this holiday season!

Jar Goods Brings Tomato Sauces and Clean Eating to New Heights

Have you tried Jar Goods? Jar Goods is a new brand of clean-label tomato sauces & pestos changing the pasta sauce industry. You might think you know pasta sauce- this these flavors take your tastebuds on a whole new level!

As a food writer, I get to try many items, and I was thrilled with Jar Goods tomato sauces!
I used them on gnocchi, fresh pasta, in lasagna, in chili, and in chicken parm, and these clean flavors do not disappoint. They are like my Italian grandmom used to make, and then better.

With the pasta sauce market estimated to reach $4.6 billion by 2026, consumers are betting on small batch, craft, emerging food brands. In fact, Jar Goods’ sales grew 55% over the previous year in 2019, and so far in 2020, our e-commerce has grown 568% over the same period last year.

Here are some flavorful reasons we’re growing so rapidly:

· Vegan Vodka Sauce: Our Vegan Vodka is the only sauce of it’s kind to use coconut milk, making it a dairy-free, full-bodied indulgence.

· The Best Kind of Spicy: Our Classic Spicy was voted as “Best Spicy” by Men’s Health, made with sweet vine-ripened tomatoes, nutty olive oil, fresh onions, garlic, basil and zesty black and red pepper.

· More Flavor: Our sauces use 72% more tomatoes, olive oil, and are more flavorful than other brands.

Over the last 50 years, “traditional” store-bought pasta sauces have gotten far from tradition. Most sauces on today’s shelves lack flavor, innovation, and are full of preservatives-- nothing like what Grandma used to make.

With today’s consumers craving real food that’s conveniently packaged, and the pasta sauce market estimated to reach $4.6 billion by 2026, it’s an industry ripe for flavorful change.

That’s where Jar Goods comes in.

Try Jar Goods, you will be eating fresh clean sauces that add amazing flavor to all your dishes.

Food Drive, VFTCB’S Freedom from Hunger, Raises Equivalent of More Than 20,000 Pounds of Food

The Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board’s (VFTCB) sixth annual Valley Forge Freedom from Hunger Food Drive has collected a total of $4,658.77 – at a rate of .23 cents per pound – that’s the equivalent of 20,256 pounds of food.

Since the drive began in 2015, the VFTCB has collected more than 45,000 pounds of food to feed the hungry in Montco, and still working!

Due to the additional need, and high demand, caused by COVID-19, the organization will continue to keep the Valley Forge Freedom from Hunger Food Drive donation link open, and push promotions on social, through the end of the year to help those struggling through the holidays. To donate, visit www.valleyforge.org/hunger.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you! We seriously can’t say enough how grateful we are to Montgomery County folks,” said Mike Bowman, President & CEO of the VFTCB. “This annual commitment to our community is so important. Our neighbors need us now more than ever. We can’t let this virus stop us. We must rally, and work together to fight COVID, and hunger.”

The VFTCB again partnered with the MontCo Anti-Hunger Network (MAHN), a coalition of hunger relief organizations working together to keep families stable with food assistance. MAHN provides resources to food pantries that feed more than 15,000 households a year, and serve the more than 80,000 people who are food insecure in the county. And, participation at many of those locations has been much higher than normal due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, according to MAHN officials.

“Dollars generated from this year’s Valley Forge Freedom from Hunger campaign will support MAHN’s COVID 19 response work,” said MAHN Executive Director Paula Schafer. “Thousands of Montco families are struggling to stay stable right now. Our goal is to channel as many resources to them as we can through our food pantry network. The visibility we get from Freedom from Hunger will equip us with more dollars and tools to do that.”

The Freedom from Hunger Food Drive benefits all people accessing food pantry services. COVID-19 has caused that number to grow. Those without the financial cushion required to manage a layoff, kids missing out on school meal programs, and seniors without means who are vulnerable to the virus are all in critical need of community support right now.

Since recovery from the public health pandemic could take years, more people than ever before will be relying on the charitable food network for assistance. This year’s donations will strengthen that network for people who need it today and tomorrow.

This year’s drive took place solely online with a goal of collecting 15,000 pounds of food. Monetary contributions to purchase canned goods, and other foods, were accepted instead of physical donations. To donate, visit www.valleyforge.org/hunger.

The donation link had been open since the pandemic hit Montgomery County in the spring, closing schools and businesses. Until the fall, the drive had raised almost $2,000, which translated to more than 7,000 pounds of food. The September push collected another almost $3,000, or an additional more than 13,000 pounds of food.

So far this year, 73% of 34 MAHN member food pantries have seen an increase in volume, in some cases double, or even triple, especially when nonessential businesses were shut down. At that time, the increase at high-volume pantries in Norristown and Lansdale saw as much as a 200-300% increase in client numbers, officials said.

Some of MAHN’s COVID-19 response work includes direct to pantry delivery of 56,710 pounds of COVID-19-prompted food donations, dollars for wholesale food purchases, and operating equipment needed by food pantries to keep up with demand, and stopgap distribution assistance to pantries temporarily closed for virus remediation, according to MAHN’s Executive Director, Paula Schafer.

The Valley Forge Freedom from Hunger Food Drive was created as a farewell “gift” to Pope Francis in when the Pontiff stayed in Montgomery County at the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary during the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. To date, more than 45,000 pounds of food have been collected!

*The Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board (VFTCB) is a nonprofit, membership-based sales and marketing organization that actively promotes Valley Forge and Montgomery County, PA as a convention site and leisure visitor destination by encouraging patronage of its 600+ member hotels, restaurants, attractions, and services. The award-winning website links visitors, meeting planners, tour operators, and residents to a diverse portfolio of brands focused on reasons to visit the region.

Phoenixville Favorite Steel City Coffeehouse & Brewery Debuts Pantry with Local Goodies

In these uncertain times, the restaurant industry has had to do a pivot unlike any other. Enter Steel City Coffeehouse and Brewery- which can now add store to its credentialed lineup.

Steel City is now offering a pantry of locally sourced goods that cater to the local community and keep the love local. This boutique pantry is offering jams, granola, gluten-free bakery items, and so much more! You can try various items while you shop, too.

"We sample one item on Saturday and Sundays to help drive sales and to allow our customers to try before they buy. All of the items are available for in-store shopping or curbside via our website," says co-owner Laura Vernola-Simpson.

"We really needed to adapt to the pandemic and when we initially closed indoor dining we were selling off our products, which our customers were really excited about. We sold out all of our inventory pretty quickly. About a month later customers started asking us if they could buy eggs, bread, and other items so that gave us the idea to add in the pantry offering not just items we already had but specialty items from small batch makers around the country," says Laura. "We use Faire, an online wholesale company for small batch makers, as well as our local friends like Stoudt's Wonderful Good Market Bread, Door Step Dairy, and Conebella Farm Cheese in Elverson, PA, plus Small Batch Granola (Vermont), Crisp & Co Pickles (Pennsylvania) and our honey spreads from Bumbleberry Farms (Somerset, PA)

Laura says so far the Feedback has been great! " We are hoping to add more requested items. Hot sellers are the essentials like milks, eggs, butter, cheese, pickles, and the Big Spoon Roaster Bars from Durham, NC.

The Steel City Pantry is now open 7 days a week through the end of winter 2021, 7am Monday through Friday, 8am on Saturday & Sunday, currently with limited indoor and outdoor seating, and has complimentary wifi. Steel City offers curbside takeout and delivery though UberEats.

Steel City Coffeehouse opened in 1997 and is Phoenixville's oldest coffeehouse and only listening room & live music venue. Since its inception, Steel City has gone through many changes (and owners). In 2016, it experienced a rebirth and has maintained its status as the artistic hub within the community under the ownership of Laura Vernola-Simpson and Ed Simpson.

In early 2019, Steel City Coffeehouse became Steel City Coffeehouse and Brewery. Head Brewer, Jeremy Burke (formerly of Tuned Up Brewing) has been focused on creating their signature Steel Mill Stout, as well as two other seasonal brews. Steel City sources locally and supports fellow small businesses.

When's Laura Going to Hit? 5 Must-Have Hurricane Prep Items

Zooming in earlier than usual during the 2020 Hurricane Season is Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Fay, Gonzalo, Hanna and Isaias. But what’s ahead? When will Laura make landfall in your area? How can homeowners get ready for severe weather?

“From our research, we’ve determined that there are five must-have items for every household in a hurricane area,” says Daniel Marshall, vice president of marketing and business development with Scepter. “These items can kick-start a homeowner’s recovery effort.

“With any luck, a homeowner may never be in a post-hurricane situation that demands they use these items. However, given that the most amount of severe weather during hurricane season traditionally strikes in late August through early October, it’s essential to prepare now and be ready.”

5 Must-Have Items

#1 – Water – People should have enough clean water so that one gallon per person is available for at least three days. This water is for drinking and sanitation. And, if you have a family, this can add up. Scepter offers a five-gallon BPA-free water container that is available in stores and online. Having these large containers filled before the storm assures homeowners of clean, fresh water for not just their use, but for pets.

 Scepter - Pic - Water Containers.jpg

#2 – Food – A three-day supply of non-perishable food should be available for every member of the family, and for pets. Canned fruits, pastas, stews and other items may require a manual can opener. Health bars, peanut butter and jelly, trail mix, dried fruits, pudding cups and other items that require no refrigeration or heating are the best items to stock the cupboard.

#3 – Fuel – Gasoline, kerosene and/or diesel fuels are needed to operate power generators, chain saws and emergency tools. Available in one-, two- and five-gallon sizes, Scepter™ SmartControl™ fuel containers  have an innovative spout design that makes it easy to fuel equipment without losing a single drop. To handle larger fuel needs, the rugged 14-gallon Duramax has a patented pump handle with a spill-proof shut-off. Sturdy six-inch wheels help easily transport the container. Videos showcasing proper filling and safe use of Scepter fuel containers are available on the company’s website.

 Scepter - Pic - Smartcontrol - All cans together.jpg

#4 – Batteries– People living in a hurricane prone area know that having a good stock of batteries is essential. With potential power outages, batteries become critical for operating flashlights and weather radios, which should be part of a disaster survival kit. They can also help with battery-operated lanterns and fans. A good supply of both LED and alkaline batteries should be on hand to operate items for at least three days.

#5 – First Aid Kit and Medicines – In the aftermath of severe weather, homeowners may need bandages, antiseptic creams, rubbing alcohol and even sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to have a stock of often-used over-the-counter medicines along with prescription medicines. Special items should also be in the kit, including hearing aid batteries, syringes and related medical supplies. The American Red Cross offers a comprehensive checklist of what should be in an emergency first aid kit.

While these top five items are of primary concern, there are additional items people should have available, like fully-charged cell phones, cash, tarps, duct tape and heavy garbage bags. The U.S. government has a special dedicated site for building a disaster kit that families should review annually. “We’re right at the point in time during the summer when people must take precautions seriously,” says Marshall. “It’s important to prepare now and store fuel, water, food and other necessities to ride out potential storms.

“Too many people wait for a hurricane to be forecast in their area before getting ready. By that time, it’s too late. The plywood is already gone. Fuel and water containers are out of stock. Supermarket shelves are empty. You don’t want to be in that situation, especially during an early-starting hurricane season like we’ve had in 2020.

“Severe weather conditions can mean long, extended periods of time without power or access to clean water. Travel may be impossible due to downed trees and flooding. Making sure to have the essentials on hand can help families immensely.”

Constructed in North America, Scepter fuel and water containers are made of high-density polyethylene and can be found online and throughout the U.S. in The Home Depot®, Walmart®, Lowe’s®, AutoZone®, Pep Boys, Target and Northern® Tool + Equipment stores. Visit www.scepter.com for more information.
