Bucks County Christmas Romance 2013

New Hope is romantic any time of year, but at the holidays, it’s amazing. Add some Christmas lights, champagne, amazing food, snow, and the perfect person to share it with and you've got yourself a magical stay!

We set out on our Bucks County Tour 2013 amid gentle flurries and arrived at The Inn at Bowman’s Hill while it was still softly snowing. Because so many people cancelled due to inclement weather, Innkeeper Michael Amery graciously upgraded us from our deluxe Hidden Pines room to the best room on the estate, the Regal Tower Suite. The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is a beautiful colonial with a carriage house and a large garage, also with guest rooms. The Regal Tower Suite is in the carriage house and attached to the main house with a private entrance.

The main house had so many charming details that you must see for yourself. The enchanting atrium nook for breakfast with the large fireplace and wood-hewn touches overlooking the outdoor pool and lounge area (open in summer), the quiet greenhouse area with live plants and a little fountain all make for a relaxing common area. The Inn at Bowman’s Hill claims it is the most romantic B&B in Bucks County and I cannot help but agree. I didn’t want to leave!

Then Mike took us to our room ... or should I say rooms. This, no doubt, has been the best room I have ever been in. My beau Stephen and I immediately decided we had to move in! Up a little flight of stairs, we came upon the sitting room with a cathedral ceiling and a Christmas tree, a small but powerful fireplace stove, and chairs and couches.

Coffee, cheese, and other snacks were set out for us, and the view of the falling snow through the many windows was delightful. The décor was classical, soothing, and comfortable—soft earth tones and rich leather predominated.

The grounds at the Inn are equally amazing. In the warmer months, guests can harvest their own eggs from the free-range chickens for breakfast, visit the Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, kayak the Delaware River and tour historic sites such as Washington’s Crossing Historic Park.

This little retreat is also perfect for small families or dual couples as it boasts a second bedroom upstairs. In the master bedroom, a King-size featherbed with down blankets, pillows and 400 thread count bed linens awaited us. Our bathroom offered a heated towel rack, which was great for our microfiber robes, and heated tile floors; this was a very nice touch as it was snowing and it made the room quite cozy. The two-person Jacuzzi tub with a TV was romantic and invigorating. The two person steam shower came complete with three separate shower heads—one that cascaded from the middle of the shower stall ceiling. There were some very choice bathroom amenities as well, and all the little touches made the room exquisite.

After we settled in, we enjoyed some coffee and then set out to Crossing Vineyard and Winery. Thanks to owner Tom Carroll, Sr, and his wife Chris, Stephen and I had a fantastic tasting and tour of the 200-year-old-estate and marveled at the changes of the property.

The many award-winning wines were delicious, and the tasting room was fully decorated for the holidays and full of happy patrons. Rich in history, this beautiful winery and vineyard is less than a mile from where George Washington crossed the Delaware in 1776.

After happily buying Christmas presents for our families, we bade farewell to Tom and Chris and headed back out into the swirling snow.

The best part about visiting Bucks County at Christmastime is the cheery lights and festive atmosphere, which we saw a lot of on our drive back to the B&B. We stopped for a quick bite to eat at Bowman’s Tavern, but didn’t have time to eat our lunch as I had scheduled in-room massages as a treat to Stephen. Even with the crazy snow, our masseuses Amanda and Jeanette arrived and we had totally relaxing massages.

After the ladies departed, we got ready for dinner at Marsha Brown, a famous Creole steakhouse, situated in the heart of New Hope, housed in a beautiful old church. We got dressed in our finery and went outside, only to find that our cute winter wonderland was now a formidable winter storm! We tried to get out to the road, but it hadn’t yet been plowed, so we made the executive decision to stay in.

Huge kudos go to the Marsha Brown staff for understanding our predicament and changing our reservations for dinner to Sunday, and to Anastacio, the resident chef and caretaker at Bowman’ Hill. They were all so accommodating! Michael offered to drive us into town, but as it was starting to sleet, I was worried.

Instead, Anastacio ushered us into the kitchen and made us delicious warm turkey and cheese sandwiches, with fresh salad and mango slices, and Michael sent up a bottle of champagne.

After such a delicious dinner, the champagne, the warm glow of the fire defying the bitter cold outside, Stephen and I peacefully slipped into sleep in our sumptuous bed, dreaming of holiday happiness—and in Stephen’s case, tomorrow morning’s gourmet breakfast.

On Sunday, the sun was out and the ice was melting, and we headed downstairs for the ‘breakfast’ part of our Bed and Breakfast stay. Anastacio, Michael, and Louise welcomed us as we ordered the full English breakfast. We began with coffee, hot chocolate, fresh juice, homemade granola and yogurt. We then had Stephen’s favorite- warm strawberry muffins, and continued with eggs, crisp bacon, maple-flavored sausage, home fried potatoes, grilled tomatoes, beans, and more.

Sated for the moment, Stephen and I once again ventured out into the cold. This time, we made for the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad to ride the North Pole Express. This venerable steam-engine powered train ferried the two of us, along with dozens of excited children and their parents, in grand style as we were serenaded by a banjo playing caroler, drank hot chocolate, and took pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

After some shopping in Love Saves the Day and other stores, it was soon time for the highlight of the day—our dinner at Marsha Brown

Instantly, we were warmly welcomed and ushered to the bar for a delicious aperitif before dinner. After a short time, we were led upstairs to the impressive main dining room. A gigantic mural dominates one wall, depicting the battle of St. George. It’s easily one of the most romantic places I have ever been in.

We sat, and Adrian, our server immediately attended to us. We ordered Lobster Bisque, Seafood and Sausage Gumbo, Crawfish Etoufee, and one of Marsha’s signature dishes, Eggplant Ophelia. This was a circular casserole of eggplant, shrimp, and other seafood, lightly spiced and baked to perfection on a bed of seasoned sauce. The etoufee was rich and buttery, perfectly marrying the delicate flavor of crawfish with the subtle peppery tang of Creole spice.

After such a glorious weekend, we did not want to leave, but we knew we’d be back very soon. For any couple or family looking for a quiet, charming oasis amid the bustle of New Hope, one need look no further than the extraordinary Inn at Bowman’s Hill. It was a stay that I will not soon forget.

Very special thanks to Michael Amery, and his wonderful staff, Louise and Anastacio at the Inn at Bowman’s Hill for everything!

A big thank you to the generous Carroll family at Crossings Vineyard & Winery.
Special thanks to Wendy Kelly and her amazing staff at Marsha Brown.
Special thanks to ever-awesome Michelle Greco at the Bucks County Visitors Bureau.

Very special thanks to my one and only Stephen for sharing this wonderful weekend with me and for your insights on the article.

Day 24 of 500 Days of Beauty! FAB's Detox Eye Roller

FirstAid Beauty Detox Eye Roller contains caffeine, a potent vasoconstrictor that constricts the fine blood vessels that cause dark undereye circles.

I am a big fan of under-eye rollers, and use a variety of them. I don't need saggy eyes! There are a ton of under-eye rollers on the market- store brands (like acme!), very high-end versions, and many individual beauty brands have their own.

But, one of my biggest pet peeves with under eye rollers is that they don't have enough product then, and so you end up dragging a dry rollerball across the already tired and possibly saggy delicate area.

This product doesn't have that issue. It's in a glass container which allows product to reach the rollerball right when you need it. Don't tip the bottle upside down, too much product can roll out.

I like that the FirstAid Beauty Detox Eye Roller has an instant effect. Of course, every woman is different- this may not work well if you have very dark under eye circles or very baggy eye circles. I could feel this one working and my under eyes looked smoother and tighter and more 'I have already had a cup of coffee' and less ' Um, I just got up where's my slippers' type of face.

·                           Hyaluronate and advanced peptides recapture lost volume and increase collagen production to reduce fine lines.
·                           Witch hazel protects and soothes the very delicate skin under the eye.
·                            The unique delivery metal roller ball gently distributes lymphatic build-up from underneath the eyes, resulting in less baggy-looking skin.
·                             Dermatologist recommended, allergy tested and fragrance free.
·                             Within minutes of application, the appearance of the undereye area is improved with more dramatic results over time.
·                             Alleviates undereye puffiness and dark circles.

·                             Diminishes fine lines. Revitalizes, smoothes and brightens the undereye area.

Tired eyes, under eye circles, dark circles, if you need to perk up, this eye roller will give you the lift you desire!

Feels nice and cool when rolling on. Order two, keep one in your handbag and one in your make area at home, even in your office desk drawer.  I really need one here at work!

This product is a must-have!

NO Parabens
NO harsh chemicals or colorants
Safe for sensitive skin

$24 for 0.34 oz.

Roll under the eye and feel a tingle as it goes to work!

The Franklin Institute Offers Rare Look Inside the Mysteries of Pompeii

One Day in Pompeii, running until April 27, 2014, gives Franklin Institute attendees an inside look to the tragedy that struck Pompeii and buried the city in the year 79.

When Mount Vesuvius erupted, the thriving city was immediately covered in volcanic ash, smothering the townspeople and burying the town. This city has been perfectly preserved, unknown and undiscovered until recently. One Day in Pompeii tells the remarkable tale of the city of Pompeii, hidden from view and forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery over 250 years ago.

One Day in Pompeii features over 150 amazing artifacts on loan from the incomparable collection of the Naples National Archaeological Museum in Italy, including wall-sized frescos, stunning marble and bronze sculptures, fantastic jewelry, ancient Roman coins, and the breathtaking full body casts of the volcano's victims. The casts are of people as they died, frozen in time forever in their poses.

You too, can experience Pompeii and the volcano eruption. The walls will shake and you will see just how devastating this catastrophic event was through an immersive CGI experience, and witness the devastation left in its path. This was a pretty wild reenactment and completely unexpected, and gives people an idea of what happened.

Spend a night or a weekend filling your stocking with holiday spirit at George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™.

When the curtain lifts, the audience is whisked to an exhilarating Christmas Eve night at the Stahlbaum estate. This beloved ballet tells the story of Marie and her brother Fritz with their friends and family, and Marie’s enchanted adventure to the Land of Sweets with the Nutcracker-turned- Prince after defeating the scary Mouse King.

Performances by the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier, the Snowflakes, Dewdrop and her Flowers, the little angles, Coffee, Tea, Hot Chocolates and Candy Canes will enthrall the audience.

This is one of the best performances of the Nutcracker™ I have seen to date- the entire cast seemed so happy to be on stage, dancing with excitement and laughter. Little Marie and her prince were a charming young couple!

Before any PA Ballet performance, make sure you visit 10 Arts Lounge at the Ritz Carlton Philadelphia. Enjoy amazing food in a gorgeous setting. Our server, Jessica, was charming and sweet, and helped us choose our dinner selections

Small plates appetizers such as Philly pretzels with cheddar sauce, Dijon mustard, and Jalapeno jam; fresh oysters, Mac, Ham and Cheese, Philly cheesesteak sliders, pork sliders, roasted nuts, fresh bread, mini pork or beef sliders.

Fresh oysters at 10 Arts Lounge

Each item was so fresh and delicious, I could barely wait to try another mouthful!

We also enjoyed roasted Kennett Square mushrooms with garlic and Parmesan, small salads and so much more.

The drinks menu is gorgeous, try the Blair and Pear, a sweet lemony-honeyed cocktail with vodka, pear, honey and lavender.

And for dessert, sample an array of chocolates and sweets, and the hot chocolate comes highly recommended with all kinds of sweet toppings. I got a hot chocolate with vanilla marshmallows and crushed peppermint candy canes.

Special thanks to Bradley Pacana and Miguel Hernandez at the Ritz Carlton Philadelphia

Shopping & a Weekend Away at the KoP DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton and T Burke’s Lounge and Gastro Pub

When people think of a hotel restaurant, they think of adequate fare with standard rooms, and not much imagination.

I’m here to tell you that it’s time to chance your perception of hotels, especially King of Prussia’s DoubleTree by Hilton

This place is a destination for all things in affordable luxury. Not just for business travelers, this hotel is a place you’ll want to visit again and again.

Let’s start with when you walk in the door, immediately welcoming and accommodating, the front desk makes sure check in is quick and efficient, and I was given a delicious warm walnut chocolate chip cookie, which is what the DoubleTree is known for, along with impeccable customer service.

Once I got to my room, I enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, two queen beds and excellent amenities, coffeemaker, and super soft bedding and pillows. After chilling out with some wine and cheese, my best pal and photog Rach and I headed down to T Burke’s Lounge and Gastro Pub. The pub is warm and inviting, with small tables and candles offering a cozy, fun atmosphere.

The charming chef John Walsh sat down with us to discuss the entire small plates menu. He is looking for clients to create and enjoy their own small plates experience, essentially creating their own tapas entrees with a modern twist on classic American fare.

The best part of Chef Walsh's creations is that you don't have to stay at the hotel just to enjoy his meals- go anytime! You don't have to be staying at the King of Prussia DoubleTree by Hilton just to enjoy drinks or dinner here- special occasion, after-works small plates with co-workers, date night or just a night out after shopping, you'll definitely enjoy your meal and the atmosphere.

We began with fresh cocktails, as the gastro pub means everything is created with fresh ingredients- mint in your mojitos, grated coconut or fresh juice are available.

The first course was a fun surprise- shrimp and smoke, which sounds quite intriguing, and it was. The shrimp bisque was rich and satisfying and the bowl was atop dry ice- creating a smoking-soup effect.

After we settled in, Chef Walsh began to bring us the small plates, beginning with 4 hour braised short ribs over mashed potatoes and plum sauce, truffled mac and cheese in a small crock with fresh Wisconsin cheddar (for extra cheeseability, said Chef Walsh) and panko crumbs, gulf shrimp, Brussel sprouts with bacon and maple syrup.

Chef Walsh has studied extensively in many countries and his food demonstrates his delicious and eclectic style. The small plates offer quality restaurant style edibles in a hotel setting.

We then had mini ‘firehouse’ potatoes with a spicy sauce inside, creating a small burst of flavor when biting down! Several kind of flatbread was on offer, including Mexican and Italian versions.

We had also had little broiled chicken drumettes which were quite savory and atop the best bleu cheese I have ever had. Then came one of my favorite bites of the night: he brought out a chargrilled burger with the usual fixings, but with a sunny-side egg on top.
The result- delicious! The flavors all merged delightfully. Add in a side of truffle fries with parmesan and it doesn’t get much better than that!

We were so full of delicious savory food, but we had to save room for dessert, which was an orange blossom honey covered with a chocolate hazelnut nougat, with whipped cream adorned with Pop-Rocks and crushed nestle crunch.

Eventually, we had to leave the dinner table and go upstairs to our room to pass out from the food haze. The DoubleTree beds were quite conducive to a good night’s sleep!

In the morning, Rach and I tried out the hotel gym before breakfast- woo more food! Breakfast included a hot buffet with an omelet station, and all kinds of hot goodies- French toast, ham, scrambled eggs, waffles, plus muffins, croissants and fresh breads and jams.

After grabbing another warm cookie, we looked around the rest of the hotel. The King of Prussia DoubleTree has banquet facilities for trade shows, meetings and weddings, plus an outdoor pool and plenty of space for whatever you need.

I stayed at this hotel for a girls’ weekend, but it can be for anything you need- so try it out for whatever you need. Being so close to the mall and shopping, stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton on 202 and make a weekend of it- shopping, stay over, relax, eat, and shop some more! Get your holiday shopping done and relax at the same time!

A big thank you to my photographer Rachel Richards.

Special thanks to Jenn Shipman at the King of Prussia DoubleTree by Hilton, as well as a big thank you to Chef John Walsh at T Burke’s Lounge and Gastro Pub.
