The Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast is turning to its menu to honor
Book Lovers Day on August 9th with a novel-inspired breakfast.
“We host a lot of avid readers and have many nooks and crannies where
guests like to relax with a good book,” said Dena Finneran, who co-owns the
Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast with her husband, John. “August brings such
great weather, we’ll often find guests reading outdoors in our shaded patio or
pergola, so this underrated holiday is actually a really great fit for us.”
The bed and breakfast cooks a full three-course breakfast each morning,
complete with personalized newspaper-style place settings. On August 9th guests
will either find a nod toward Oliver Twist or Little Women on their plates; the
menu will depend on several factors, such as guests’ dietary restrictions,
weather, etc.
If it’s Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist represented at the table, the
breakfast would be a hearty oatmeal, for the line in the book: 'Please sir, can
I have some more?' which refers to porridge. The Louisa May Alcott, Little
Women-inspired, breakfast would be sausage, egg, and orange, to fit with the
iconic scene in the book where the March girls take their breakfast to a family
in more need than their own.
After breakfast, and perhaps a chapter or two, guests will want to
explore the area. There are more than a dozen beautiful and unique bookstores in
the Hudson Valley, including the renowned Oblong Books & Music; and the
Spotty Dog, a bookstore that doubles as a bar and carries local hand-crafted
ales and wines.
Aside from book shops, there are also various author homes
nearby, like Washington Irving’s home where fans may sign up for hour-long
tours by hosts in period garb. There are also incredible libraries, like the
F.D.R. Library and Museum with breathtaking views of the Hudson River and
dozens of historic documents.
